Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree through an accredited college or university
Current nursing licensure in good standing in the state of practice
2 years of recent Labor & Delivery experience
Current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NALS or A-1 credentials are mandatory
This RN alerts the attending physicians in case of complications during labor, so that further interventions can occur, such as caesarian delivery. The nurse assists the physicians with epidurals or pain medications, episiotomies, and /or preparation for caesarian delivery. The labor and delivery nurse must also be comfortable with starting IVs to administer fluids and the labor inducing drug Pitocin.
The L&D nurse monitors the fetal heart rate of the baby as well as the blood pressure, temperature, strength and timing of contractions and cervical dilation of the mother in the progress of labor. During actual delivery, the nurse can coach the woman with breathing and pushing.
The L&D nurse must possess excellent critical thinking skills and an ability to make decisions quickly using good professional judgment. Each woman who is admitted to L&D has at least one baby who also becomes the nurse's patient.
The nurse must be able to communicate effectively with the physicians, the patient and the patient's family in order to ensure a safe and healthy delivery. This RN must maintain confidentiality in matters related to patient, family and client facility staff.
Reports patient condition to appropriate personnel during each shift and change of shift.
